Short Circuit Stories
The pieces in this collection were mainly assembled in my Berlin studio between 2007-2009. All are based on circuit boards that came from my own computers or the computers of friends. I find the circuitry so beautiful that it’s a shame to send it to a landfill, especially when it degrades into poisonous junk. That’s why I started using it as a canvas after sealing it behind a layer of acrylic.
I would spread out several foundation boards on one of my work tables and look through my collection of odds and ends to see what called to me. Most of these pieces took form over weeks or months as I discovered or collected their component parts. Since some circuit boards seem made for cubist collage, I started with images on these boards, and then added found objects. Friends started to collect small objects for me, and so were always bringing me tiny bits and pieces, many of which were incorporated into work on the table.
Each assemblage evolved to tell its own story—fairy tales, cautionary tales, moments in time, dreams, and nightmares. I noticed that people were quickly drawn to different pieces because their implicit stories resonated in a particular way. A few of these are left on my walls, but most have found their way to other homes. They are small and delicate, but can be packaged well for shipment.
